This is a fanfic about how Krestala and her sisters tried to leave Bajor during the Occupation when Kres was five. It starts out when her brother Jamel had died.

Here's some things you might need to know before you read.

When their dad died they went to live with Jamels girlfriend, Sora, and her family.
Jamel and Sora are 14.
Sora was the one who decided to escape and bring Krestala, Tiyal, and Theyla with her.

Okay, that's all you need to know for now.

Chapter One: Jamel

“Jamel! Stay awake!” Sora snapped. She glanced over at four year old Krestala and sighed. “Jamel,” she whispered “Kres is here.”

Jamel nodded his head. Sora left the room to leave the brother and sister alone.

“Krestala,” he groaned. “I need you to stay strong.”

“Why?” Krestala asked, worried. ‘That’s what mommy said’.

“Because I’m about to leave,” Jamel managed. “I need you to look after Tiyal and Theyla when I’m gone.”

“Where are you going?” Kres asked.

“To see the Prophets.”

“NO!” Kres yelled. She knew what that term meant. That’s what her mother had told her right before she died. “No, no you can’t!”

“It isn’t something I can help, Kres,” Jamel told her. “You must understand.”

“But why?” she wailed.

“That’s not important. Kres, I need you to be strong. You must look after our sisters.”
“What do you want me to do?”

“Sora is planning on escaping. She has promised to take you and Tiyal and Theyla with her,” he said.

“Escaping?” Kres said, looking out the window. “To where?”

“I don’t know,” Jamel admitted. “But when you do, there is a possibility that you and Sora may be separated. If that happens, you must take care of your sisters,” Jamel took Krestala’s hand and grasped it tightly. “Promise me you will watch over them.”

“I promise.”

“Good,” he said, letting go of her hand. “Now-” Jamel started coughing. Then he stopped breathing all together.

“Jamel!” Krestala shaking him. “Wake up Jamel! Wake up! Jamel! JAMEL!”

Sora came running into the room.

“Kres,” she started. She noticed the girl was crying. “It’s okay Krestala.”

“Why?” she sobbed.

“Why what?”
“Why did he have to leave?”

“Krestala, he’s in a better place. You really don’t want him to stay here with all the Cardassians, do you?” she asked.

“Well, let’s go downstairs. We must tell everyone he’s gone.”

“Okay,” and Krestala, still sobbing, left the room and Jamel’s body with it.

Chapter Two: The Funeral

from: krestala
date: Dec. 1st, 2005 12:19 am (UTC)

The funeral was small. They decided to cremate him. Not that they had much choice. There was nowhere to bury Jamel.

Sora was there. So were her parents. Tiyal and Theyla were sitting by Sora’s feet. Krestala was not there.

She couldn’t bring herself to attend. If she did, she would have to acknowledge the fact that Jamel was really with the Prophets. Instead she barricaded herself in Sora’s parents room. She couldn’t go into her room. That room had a window that viewed the funeral. Sora’s room was where Jamel had died. So that left Mr. and Mrs. Jerans room.

She heard the fire crackling even louder and she knew Jamel’s body had been put in the fire. Krestala began crying.

Chapter Three: What Happened Next

from: krestala
date: Feb. 23rd, 2006 08:37 pm (UTC)

Over the year Krestala finally adjusted to the fact that Jamel was gone.

Also in that year: Krestala turned five, Tiyal and Theyla turned three, Sora turned fifteen, and the plans for escape became even stronger. A villiage near them got raided, and Sora's parents were taken to a labor camp.

Three months before the escape, Sora took Krestala, Tiyal, and Theyla to see Gwatheil.
